Lavanneau

A community which has been successfully managing several captured springs to deliver water to their otherwise water-scarce community

Lavanneau is a rural community of 15,000 inhabitants in the rural sections close to Jacmel. It is a strong agricultural community, but like many farming communities in Haiti, has difficulties keeping its fields irrigated. For that matter, the community had difficulty getting water to its people for their daily needs.

In 2010 the community mobilized to create an action plan for how to address this issue. The began doing volunteer work to create and maintain a network of irrigation canals in the community, and through their efforts were able to gain the respect of a partner FKGJ that helped to finance some of the materials needed to reinforce some of the canals with concrete. They were also given some support on capturing and managing the 3 natural springs in the community to be able to provide Lavanneau's residents with water to use in their houses. All of these systems are now being maintained by the community.
